The Theater Technical Support Substitute plays a crucial role in providing logistical, technical, and instructional assistance for theatrical productions and related coursework. This position is responsible for managing and executing various technical components, including set construction, lighting, sound, special effects, and other essential services that facilitate the staging of theatrical events.
Role Definition:
Under general supervision, substitute personnel carry out a range of tasks to support the operations of a college or district program or office. These non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are appointed temporarily during the recruitment process for permanent positions or to fill in for classified employees who are temporarily absent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and oversee the setup of theatrical lighting, sound, video, and other equipment necessary for performances. Collaborate with production teams to determine specific sound and lighting needs for various events.
- Construct and design stage scenery, preparing detailed working drawings and floor plans for stage setups. Position scenery and sets to optimize lighting and sound effects, and create lighting cues for use by students and technicians.
- Provide on-site technical expertise during theatrical events, offering guidance and support to theater groups and personnel regarding staging techniques and processes.
- Design and implement scenery and lighting as required for theater productions and other events.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned to support the objectives of the position.

Education and Experience:
This position requires an Associate's degree in a theater-related field and five years of relevant experience providing technical support for theater productions. A Bachelor's degree in theater arts is preferred, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent qualifications.
Licenses and Certificates:
A valid California driver license is required.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily conducted indoors, where safety considerations related to physical labor and the use of electricity and power tools are present.
Conditions of Employment:
Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are appointed temporarily during the recruitment process for permanent positions or to replace classified employees who are temporarily absent. These employees are at-will and do not have entitlement rights to any position within the District. Substitute employment will not result in the displacement of classified personnel.
