Job Summary

This is an interdisciplinary position that may be filled as a Biologist or Physical Scientist within the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center. The selected candidate will be responsible for managing activities and providing oversight of laboratories, developing instructional guidance, and coordinating with other USGS programs to develop laboratory capability use strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage laboratory activities and provide oversight to ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
  • Develop and implement instructional guidance, such as standard operating procedures and job aids, on the usage of various laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinate with other USGS programs to develop laboratory capability use strategies in support of shared analytical tools and expertise.
  • Operate a government-owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Work Environment

The work is typically performed in an office or laboratory, however, work during field season may occur. Laboratory work involves following strict and established guidelines for personal and laboratory safety. Work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to exposure to a range of weather and temperature conditions; poisonous growth, insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife; rough seas, slippery surfaces; irrigating chemicals; noxious fumes; flammable liquids; radioisotope standards; instrument noise.

Requirements
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Applicants must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Applicants may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must provide a valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Applicants must be subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam.
Education and Experience

Applicants must meet the basic education requirement for Biologist or Physical Scientist, which includes a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Alternatively, applicants may meet the requirement through a combination of education and experience. In addition, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.
