- Conducts echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, and transesophageal echocardiograms as requested by the referring physician. Proficient in analyzing echocardiographic data to generate a preliminary report for the cardiologist's review.
- Graduation from an accredited echocardiography program (CAAHEP accredited) is preferred.
- High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
- 1 to 3 years of relevant experience is preferred.
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification from recognized organizations or the ability to obtain certification within 6 weeks of employment.
- Proven expertise in performing echocardiograms is preferred.
- Familiarity with basic medical terminology and administrative tasks related to scheduling, order entry, record-keeping, and patient interactions.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
- Competence with all relevant equipment used in echocardiography.
- Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
- Ability to maintain composure and efficiency in high-pressure situations, including emergencies and critical scenarios.
- Provides clear explanations of the echocardiogram process, detailing the examination and expected duration. Addresses logistical inquiries without disclosing preliminary findings and assists patients during check-out while prioritizing safety.
- Positions patients appropriately, applies ultrasound gels and electrodes, connects and calibrates equipment, and ensures accurate ECG readings.
- Generates high-quality echocardiographic images in compliance with facility protocols and IAC standards. Skillfully positions the transducer to capture optimal ultrasound images and adjusts settings for 2D imaging and Doppler analysis.
- Captures 2-3 beat acquisitions of cardiac structures and measures parameters such as wall thickness, chamber size, ejection fraction, and hemodynamics. Reviews previous echocardiogram results for comparative analysis.
- Adheres to facility policies and procedures, maintaining patient confidentiality and safeguarding sensitive information.
- Engages in IAC meetings and fulfills quarterly quality assurance requirements. Stays updated with continuing medical education (CME) and license renewal obligations. Conducts routine maintenance checks on equipment and reports any issues, manages inventory, and reviews physician orders for examinations.
- Assists cardiologists and anesthesiologists with transesophageal echocardiograms in various settings, including outpatient, inpatient, interventional lab, and operating room environments. Demonstrates proficiency in stress echocardiography techniques, including dobutamine and treadmill stress tests.
- Utilizes Definity contrast when necessary and communicates its purpose to patients. Performs saline contrast bubble studies with the assistance of nursing staff when appropriate. Exhibits strong interpersonal skills, fostering positive interactions with colleagues and patients. Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
