Quantum Sensing Research Physicist

Job Overview

SRI International is a renowned, independent research organization dedicated to providing innovative, scientist-led solutions to significant global challenges. We are currently seeking a talented individual to join our team in advancing our quantum sensing initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a robust understanding of experimental Atomic-Molecular-Optical (AMO) Physics and a proven track record in the development and application of neutral-atom quantum sensors.

Key Responsibilities

This role will involve hands-on work, ranging from the creation of cutting-edge, optically pumped magnetometers to conducting application-focused experiments and demonstrations. You will collaborate with a dynamic team of applied physicists and engineers engaged in pioneering R&D projects within the quantum sensing domain. Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and executing laboratory experiments to achieve proof-of-concept and precision measurements.
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of custom optical systems for compact sensor configurations.
  • Conducting detailed electromagnetic simulations and analyses.
  • Supporting the design and integration of sensor systems, including mechanical, firmware, and software components.
  • Troubleshooting sensor and system operations in non-laboratory settings.
  • Developing and implementing algorithms.
  • Conducting field testing and measurements, which may require travel.
  • Collaborating with leading academic institutions.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Applied Physics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with post-doctoral experience preferred.
  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory, along with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with optically pumped magnetometry or Rydberg-atom systems.
  • Expertise in advanced optical systems and coherent optical technologies.
  • Strong numerical and analytical modeling capabilities (e.g., Python, MATLAB, COMSOL).
  • Solid understanding of electromagnetics; signal processing knowledge is advantageous.
  • Experience with precision measurement techniques.
  • Familiarity with atom-photon interactions.
  • Knowledge of the physics related to atom-based vapor and vacuum cells.

Personal Attributes:

  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented approach.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Self-motivated and results-driven.
  • Interest in diverse technical areas.
