Position Overview:

As a pivotal member of Lakeview Loan Servicing, the Underwriting Manager will be responsible for supervising the credit assessment and quality assurance of both third-party and internally generated loans. This role encompasses evaluating credit determinations, interpreting investor guidelines and policies, and meticulously reviewing loan submissions to ensure compliance with established standards.

The successful candidate will assess credit risk to ensure that loans from clients and internal sales teams are insurable by relevant agencies. This position offers the flexibility of remote work or a hybrid schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of 8-10 Underwriters, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Conduct weekly team meetings to support direct reports in meeting production and compliance objectives.
  • Oversee department workflow to enhance efficiencies as directed by Senior Management.
  • Manage expectations regarding timelines and processes related to the Underwriting team.
  • Collaborate with other managers in the operations/sales division to lead the development and implementation of the department's quality control program.
  • Stay informed of changes in credit underwriting practices and communicate updates to relevant staff and managers.
  • Monitor the volume of incoming applications and loans submitted for final underwriting review.
  • Ensure timely credit underwriting in compliance with all applicable criteria.
  • Review and assess mortgage loan documentation to verify that buyer, property, and loan conditions meet established standards.
  • Coordinate diligence activities with external clients to ensure loan requirements are fulfilled.
  • Maintain fair lending practices while achieving productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction targets.
  • Prioritize and allocate workload to maximize efficiency.
  • Analyze appraisals to determine the reasonable value of properties and identify conditions necessary for loan guarantees.
  • Advise clients on best practices to facilitate smooth loan deliveries.
  • Understand agency risk appetites.

Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of mortgage banking origination practices, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • In-depth understanding of GSE underwriting requirements.
  • Strong grasp of operational responsibilities related to the purchase and transfer of whole loan assets concerning credit quality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and external contacts.

Experience Required:

  • At least 10 years of experience in mortgage banking.
  • A minimum of 5 years in an underwriting or management capacity.
  • Familiarity with FHA and VA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of QM/ATR requirements.
  • Experience with jumbo loans is advantageous.
