Job Title: Senior Cryogenic Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Cryogenic Mechanical Engineer to join our Quantum Computing team at Microsoft Corporation. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining cryogenic equipment, improving and upgrading existing equipment, and ensuring the performance and reliability of cryogenic systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain cryogenic equipment, including refrigerators and vacuum systems.
  • Improve and upgrade existing cryogenic equipment to meet the needs of our Quantum Computing team.
  • Ensure the performance and reliability of cryogenic systems, including troubleshooting and resolving issues.
  • Prepare 3D CAD, 2D drawings, and bills of material for custom cryogenic products and non-standard cryogenic products.
  • Perform all necessary prototyping and analysis to support your designs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 6+ years of experience in industry or research and development, or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 4+ years of experience in industry or research and development, or Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 1+ year of experience in industry or research and development.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in hands-on systems experience, expertise in design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and operating of 4K and mK cryogenic refrigerators, 3D CAD experience, Creo and/or SolidWorks, designing for manufacturability, and installing, of ultr-high vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including Microsoft Cloud Background Check, Citizenship & Citizenship Verification.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Engineering project management and best practices.
  • Analytical problem-solving and system troubleshooting best practices.
  • Analytical techniques, including root cause analysis, basic structural, thermal, stress, machine design.
  • Familiarity with liquefier design, maintenance, and operation, dilution refrigerator design, maintenance, and operation, COMSOL/Ansys, Helium leak checking and debug, Residual Gas Analyzers, Vacuum pump cart with molecular turbo, Transfer dewars, General machine shop tools.
