Position Overview:
The Credit Risk Review Manager is tasked with the strategic development, planning, and execution of a quarterly continuous safety and soundness examination framework for the Company's residential mortgage lending divisions. This role involves leading initiatives that assess the integrity of credit and correspondent counterparty risk management processes and controls implemented by the residential mortgage business units. The incumbent will also conduct ongoing evaluations of credit risk exposure and trends within the underlying residential mortgage portfolios.

Department Overview:
The Credit Risk & Review Group consists of two distinct yet collaboratively integrated teams: Internal Credit Risk Review and Credit Risk Oversight. Together, these teams form a unified second line risk management organization dedicated to safeguarding the financial stability of the Company by identifying, assessing, and escalating credit risks to senior management and the Board. The Group is accountable to the Directors' Risk Committee of the Board of Western Alliance Bancorporation and reports administratively to the Chief Risk Officer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the residential mortgage lending landscape, including retail direct lending, correspondent lending, servicing rights, secondary market investors, government-sponsored enterprises, and applicable federal regulations.
  • Design, implement, and manage a continuous safety and soundness examination model aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of credit and counterparty risk management processes.
  • Perform ongoing monitoring of portfolio and correspondent counterparty risks.
  • Conduct independent risk evaluations of both new and existing residential mortgage products and lending initiatives.
  • Document and report quarterly examination findings, highlighting any discrepancies or deficiencies in loan or counterparty files in a clear and constructive manner.
  • Monitor credit risk within residential lending portfolios to detect asset quality deterioration or adverse management control trends, ensuring compliance with credit policies and underwriting guidelines.
  • Identify emerging risk areas through continuous examination processes that focus on leading indicators of potential credit risks.
  • Analyze Management Information System (MIS) data to detect negative trends in performance indicators.
  • Communicate sensitive issues and examination results effectively and collaboratively.
  • Build and maintain internal peer relationships that foster a culture of trust and interdependence.
  • Provide technical guidance to business units on credit policies and best practices to enhance quality and consistency.
  • Ensure uniform application of enterprise-wide credit policies and Internal Credit Risk Review procedures.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned on an ad hoc basis.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five years of experience in residential mortgage credit risk, ideally with a background in underwriting and credit risk management.
  • Completion of a formal credit training program is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Prior experience in credit risk review is advantageous but not essential.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field is required.
  • Strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of commercial credit principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting, financial statements, tax returns, and cash flow analyses, with the ability to assess a borrower's credit risk profile.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and the capacity to understand business concepts to propose viable solutions.
  • Thorough knowledge of banking regulations and sound commercial lending practices.
  • Experience in reviewing probability of default (PD) and loss given default (LGD) analyses.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly to various stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic, thriving in a dynamic environment while demonstrating accountability.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Collaborative team player who shares information and encourages participation.
