Job Summary

Goldbelt is seeking a highly skilled Language Specialist to play a vital role in preserving, revitalizing, and promoting Indigenous languages. This position requires a deep understanding of Indigenous language structure, culture, and community, as well as experience in language documentation, teaching, and development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive language documentation and revitalization projects, including language mapping, audio/video recording, and transcription.
  • Develop and implement language learning materials and curriculum, aligning with industry best practices.
  • Teach Lingit language classes and workshops to community members of all ages, fostering a love for language and culture.
  • Provide language support services, including translation and interpretation, to facilitate effective communication.
  • Collaborate with community members to document and preserve cultural knowledge associated with the language, ensuring its continuation for future generations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with language learners, elders, and community members, promoting a sense of community and shared purpose.
  • Support the development of Lingit language teachers for students of all ages, providing guidance and mentorship.
  • Participate in language conferences, workshops, and individual development to stay current on best practices and industry trends.
  • Develop and implement language technology initiatives, such as language dictionaries and online learning platforms, to enhance language learning and preservation.
  • Contribute to the development of language policies and standards, ensuring their alignment with industry best practices and community needs.
Requirements
  • Fluency in Lingit, with a strong understanding of its structure, culture, and community.
  • Experience in language documentation, teaching, or development, with a proven track record of success.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong sense of initiative and adaptability.
  • Proficiency in computer software and language documentation tools, with a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certificate or degree in linguistics, language education, Indigenous language, or related field, with a strong understanding of language preservation and revitalization.
  • Experience in community-based language revitalization, with a proven track record of success.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language technology, with a strong understanding of its applications and potential.
  • Experience in curriculum development and instructional design, with a focus on language learning and preservation.
