Job Responsibilities:
This role involves performing advanced mechanical tasks to diagnose and resolve issues with various transit vehicles. The individual will engage in a range of activities that require specialized skills and knowledge, operating under general supervision with ongoing reviews for precision and thoroughness.
Key Duties Include:
- Maintaining detailed records of repairs, parts utilized, and labor hours.
- Ordering and procuring necessary parts and supplies.
- Utilizing power tools and equipment for repairs, including pneumatic wrenches, lathes, and diagnostic instruments.
- Repairing or replacing faulty components, including engines, brakes, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Conducting inspections and adjustments on vehicle systems such as headlights, wipers, and fluid levels.
- Driving city vehicles to collect parts, conduct road tests, or respond to service calls.
Additional Responsibilities:
Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with standard mechanical principles, practices, and tools.
- Understanding of safety regulations and health hazards in the workplace.
- Experience with diesel engines and heavy machinery maintenance.
- Proficiency in using mechanical tools and equipment safely and accurately.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical issues and implement effective solutions.
- Capability to maintain accurate records and manage parts inventory.
- Skill in interpreting technical documents, schematics, and manuals.
- Ability to foster positive working relationships with colleagues.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to use two-way radios.
- Willingness to obtain at least one ASE Certification within 90 days of hire.
- Ability to secure a welding certification.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess or be able to obtain an Illinois Class B Driver's License with airbrake and passenger endorsements. ASE certifications or equivalent are required, with at least one certification to be acquired within 90 days of employment. Maintenance of ASE certifications is necessary, along with obtaining a welding certificate.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically capable of performing vehicle maintenance tasks, completing necessary documentation, and wearing safety gear while working in the field. The role requires standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, and lifting heavy components (up to 50 lbs). Exposure to chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions is expected.
