Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Physician Assistant to join our team in the Emergency Medicine department at Johns Hopkins University. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in emergency medicine and excellent clinical skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with our multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive and accurate histories and physicals, including chief complaint, presenting signs and symptoms, and past medical history and interval history.
  • Recognize differences between normal and abnormal findings in H & P, and validate or discuss significant findings with a physician as appropriate.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, x-rays, diets, physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or other services when delegated by a supervising physician.
  • Initiate IV therapy by peripheral, central, intraosseous routes, and venous cutdown, and perform injections, arterial puncture, venipuncture, and arterial line insertion.
  • Initiate Basic/Advanced life support in response to emergency situations.
  • Prepare chart documentation for review and counter signature by the physician.
  • Determine differential diagnosis.
  • Maintain technical proficiency with approved procedures, including suturing, wound care, and orthopedic care.
  • Prescribe and regulate medications.
  • Evaluate outcomes of previously implemented interventions.
  • Arrange consultations and referrals when needed.
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss patient and unit requirements, and participate in daily informal discussions with the physician and other healthcare professionals to plan patient care.
  • Give input for design of research protocols and procedures.
  • Responsible for the conduct of EM-sponsored clinical trials, including regulatory issues, recruitment, and good clinical practice.
  • Coordinate the implementation of protocols in conjunction with other staff members.
  • Oversee daily operations for clinical research protocols in collaboration with other staff.
  • Responsible to obtain informed consent from study participants.
  • Participate in the interviewing process of clinical staff, and make hiring recommendations.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.
  • Completion of a CAAHEP-certified Physician Assistant program.
  • Must be licensed as a PA in the State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a related clinical area and obtained proficiency in the area of specialty.
  • Residency or fellowship programs in the area of specialization may substitute for some experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years related experience.
  • Experience in Emergency Medicine.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required.
Physical Requirements

Sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
