Mental Health Assistant

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Mental Health Aide to join our team at Martin Luther King Jr Community Hospital. As a Mental Health Aide, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to patients in our Emergency Department. Your primary responsibility will be to assist patients with daily living activities, provide emotional support, and maintain a safe and clean environment.
Key Responsibilities- Obtain verbal report from the patient's nurse to include information regarding the patient's identified care needs, diagnosis, visual, auditory, or language barriers, as well as any special considerations.
- Provide physical support to assist assigned patients with daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising.
- Obtain instruction from the nurse regarding ambulation limitations and course of action for redirection of the patient if needed.
- Review patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences to ensure patients receive appropriate diets.
- Measure and record food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.
- Record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as directed by medical or nursing staff.
- Never leave the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the registered nurse.
- May accompany the patient and nurse for testing and procedures off the unit but must remain within arm's length of the patient unless otherwise directed by the person performing the test or procedure.
- Observe the patient's activity and behavior and communicate regularly with the nurse. Receive direction from the nurse regarding what to report, to whom, and how.
- Provide for patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction. Maintain the patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.
- Function cooperatively as a team member. Respond as directed by the responsible nurse to changing patients'/unit's needs.
- Communicate in a professional manner and demonstrate respect for patients, families/significant other, and other healthcare members.
- Offer support and feedback to peers and staff. Apply principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.
- Accurately and legibly record data collected and notify the RN of any untoward events, i.e., physical symptoms, behavioral changes, violent behavior, etc.
- Seek and support opportunities for professional growth and development.
- Offer consistent and visible support to team members.
- Comply with all hospital rules, regulations, and nursing standards.
- Strive to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Commitments.
- Verbalize understanding and responsibilities during all Emergency codes. When sitting, the assigned patient remains the Mental Health Aide's PRIMARY responsibility at all times.
- Responsible for honest behavior in all matters. To the best of the employee's knowledge and understanding, comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
- Maintain the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Use and disclose only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
