Engineering Technician Associate

Job Summary:

This Engineering Technician Associate position is the entry-level for the Engineering Technician class series and is located in Topeka, KS. The position aids in the acquisition and development of survey data to support the highway design and right of way control for engineering projects of KDOT. The position requires frequent overnight travel and exposure to farm animals, poisonous insects, plants, snakes, and wildlife encountered in pastures and wooded areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists on a preliminary design survey crew operating GPS equipment, robotic total stations, LIDAR scanners, and automatic levels in the gathering of survey data.
  • Assists in the recovery of survey monumentation, utilizes hand and mechanical tools, and assists in the clearing survey project of weeds, brush, and small trees.
  • Utilizes tripod/tribrach type equipment or prism pole for sights on survey operations and recovers and occupies previously determined survey points on their own recognizance and ability.
  • Assists in traffic control as necessary.
  • Learns survey methods and survey math by on-the-job training from supervisor/staff.
  • Performs maintenance and minor repairs to survey equipment, maintains a clean and neat work environment in the vehicles, and aids in the daily cleanup and detail of the survey equipment and vehicles.
  • Serves as a note keeper during the survey operation and makes preliminary survey calculations with a survey controller, computer, or handheld calculator.

Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.
  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03.
