POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Wilderness Trails Camp Leader (WTCL) is primarily a mentor and guide for young individuals, with responsibilities extending beyond simple oversight of team members. The WTCL plays a crucial role in the personal and professional growth of each participant as they navigate the challenges of living and working in diverse, remote environments for an extended period while engaging in physically demanding tasks.

The WTCL is tasked with:

  • Leading and supervising a trail crew in backcountry settings.
  • Facilitating individual growth and fostering a strong crew community.
  • Training team members in trail maintenance, wilderness survival, and navigation skills.
  • Developing and executing a comprehensive curriculum for the season.
  • Overseeing trail projects and managing crew operations.
  • Performing various administrative tasks as required by program and land management needs.

JOB DUTIES

The incumbent will reside and work in remote backcountry locations for several months, far from immediate medical assistance. Communication with the outside world will be limited, primarily relying on mail for personal correspondence.

Environmental conditions may include:

  • Rain, snow, extreme temperatures (both hot and cold), and dry weather.
  • Exposure to wildlife and natural hazards such as wildfires and falling trees.

The role demands physical endurance, requiring daily hikes of 3-20 miles over rugged terrain while carrying substantial loads. Living conditions will be primitive, with no modern conveniences, and team members will be expected to adhere to strict hygiene and cooking standards.

The WTCL will operate under structured guidelines, following federal and state regulations regarding wilderness living. The position requires flexibility, as work hours may vary, and the incumbent must be prepared to respond to emergencies at any time.
