**Key Responsibilities**

Develop and implement effective solutions to complex technical challenges, ensuring quality, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness. Provide guidance and assistance to junior professionals on related tasks, promoting knowledge sharing and skill development.

Apply technical expertise in a specialized field or broad-based experience in multiple technical areas to resolve complex problems. Incorporate advanced technical practices and features, such as complex technical requirements, new materials or processes, and difficult coordination or oversight requirements, into problem-solving and program planning.

Lead the determination of solutions to complex problems, recognized as an expert in a functional area(s) of technical expertise. Provide direction and position responsibility both within and outside department lines on programs seeking new approaches to problems and new applications of existing engineering or scientific principles.

Evaluate program results, preparing reports and recommendations based on these evaluations. Identify and recommend improvements where established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solutions. Stay informed of technological advancements as applied through one's area of technology.

Develop plans, including schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements, for solving technical tasks identified by management. Monitor progress, expenditures, and quality of work performed. Communicate results and objectives verbally and in written form to customers, colleagues, and management. Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.

Enhance expertise in the field through leadership in local technical societies. Demonstrate creative ability through patent disclosures, problem-solving, engineering reports, technical papers, and articles.

**Requirements**

A Ph.D. degree in an applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years' experience, or a MS with 8+ years' experience, or a BS with 10+ years' experience or more. The candidate must be knowledgeable of pyrophoric materials and familiar with waste handling and waste acceptance at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).

The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments.

**Work Environment / Physical Demands**

The work is performed in an office environment, requiring the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Light to moderate lifting may be required for packages and other items, and the ability to walk short distances may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
