Job Title: Laboratory Manager

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Manager to join our team at Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, MA. This is a leadership opportunity to oversee the operations and administration of the clinical laboratory testing for the Anatomic Pathology department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct the daily operational activities of the histology and cytology department, ensuring adequate coverage and proper use of overtime.
  • Effectively manage the staffing of the department, monitor production schedules, and adjust as needed.
  • Directly supervise, train, and mentor laboratory supervisors and have ownership and responsibility for all departmental staff.
  • Ensure the diagnostics laboratory provides service levels meeting the needs of our pathologists and clients through established metrics for TAT and Quality.
  • Resolve client inquiries and operational issues in a timely manner by consulting with the Medical Director, Technical Director, QA, other laboratory managers, discipline directors, laboratory directors, or corporate operations.
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with corporate, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to personnel safety, hazardous waste, and quality of laboratory testing as well as professional conduct.
  • Assist with developing and implementing laboratory procedures and installation of equipment and methods.
  • Manage staff, including recruiting and hiring qualified employees, performance management, training, and development.
  • Ensure effective communication with leadership, clients, pathologists, corporate operations, direct reports, and all departmental staff.
  • Conduct departmental meetings and ensure appropriate departmental communication.
  • Investigate deviations from established procedures to ensure effective corrective action.
  • Maintain technical knowledge in the assigned department(s) for the laboratory pathology departments for desired locations.
  • Oversee the Quality Metrics are being presented and meeting expectations, for both sites.
  • Oversee the laboratory safety program being managed by the supervisor at primary site.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Histotechnology, Cytology, Medical Technology, or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Histotechnologist or Cytologist in a histology or cytology laboratory.
  • Histology and/or ASCP certifications are highly preferred.
  • Prior supervisor experience managing several direct reports.
  • Previous experience managing people leaders is a plus.
  • Experience in a high-volume clinical laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and relevant state regulations.
  • Understanding of laboratory operations as well as policies and procedures.
  • Proven success in training and developing both technical and non-technical employees.
  • Ability to problem solve and provide solutions under minimal supervision.
  • Proficient with Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • High level of attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
  • Comfortability making decisions in a changing environment.
  • Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position.
