POSITION OVERVIEW:

This role is essential to the YMCA, a prominent nonprofit organization focused on enhancing community well-being through youth engagement, healthy lifestyles, and social accountability. The Lifeguard is responsible for establishing and maintaining a secure, positive, and interactive aquatic environment that prioritizes member safety in line with YMCA standards and protocols. The Lifeguard employs rescue techniques and equipment to deliver optimal care and effectively respond to emergencies both in and out of the water.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Monitor and supervise the active swimming area, engaging with members, swim lesson participants, and program attendees throughout shifts.
  2. Implement Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), perform rescues, and provide necessary first aid and care to injured individuals.
  3. Communicate and enforce safety regulations and guidelines regarding the aquatic facility and available equipment to members and program participants.
  4. Conduct regular inspections of equipment, water quality, and facility cleanliness to ensure safety, hygiene, and an exceptional member experience.
  5. Understand, review, and apply all safety, emergency, and child protection policies and procedures, responding to emergencies according to YMCA protocols.
  6. Participate in all staff meetings and training sessions to maintain skills, foster connections with colleagues, and share insights with others.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 15 years
  • Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens, along with completion of YMCA-specific training upon hiring.
  • Certification in Emergency Oxygen is preferred.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and listening abilities to collaborate with staff and members, ensuring a high-quality experience.
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively.
  • Completion of required YMCA training upon hiring.
  • Ability to connect with diverse groups from various social and economic backgrounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, the employee is frequently required to demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards and maintain the physical and mental readiness required for certification.
  • The employee must be capable of lifting and/or moving up to ten pounds and performing rescues for patrons of varying body weights.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and move around the pool deck, assisting patrons of all ages.
  • The employee is often required to utilize oral and listening skills to observe distress signals in the aquatic environment and enforce safety regulations.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close and distance vision.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.

COMPENSATION: Starting pay is $14.50/hr
