Principal IT Infrastructure Engineer

Position Overview:
The South Dakota Board of Regents is looking for a Senior IT Systems Engineer to enhance and support the planning, design, installation, programming, testing, and maintenance of infrastructure systems.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:

• Assess hardware and software requirements for the institution.
• Collaborate with vendors to define specifications for hardware and software solutions.
• Propose improvements to the campus infrastructure and resources.
• Oversee a team and participate in on-call duties as part of the IT Operations team.

This is a full-time role based on campus.

Core Duties Include:
Engaging with various network services, security systems, email services, directory services, configuration management tools, storage solutions, virtualization technologies, cloud services, load balancing systems, and web systems.

Accountabilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for:

• Creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation for all infrastructure services.
• Monitoring the performance and availability of infrastructure systems.
• Ensuring service contracts are established to fulfill the institution's needs.
• Documenting test plans and their outcomes.

Required Knowledge:
Proficiency in:

• Networking protocols and operating systems.
• Client and server operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux).
• Systems and Network operating Center monitoring tools.
• Security technologies.

Essential Skills:
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to:

• Identify and implement enhancements to IT infrastructure.
• Troubleshoot and resolve IT infrastructure issues.
• Effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Write and speak clearly and effectively.
• Evaluate new hardware and software for relevance and effectiveness.
• Build and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues, clients, and vendors.
• Collaborate effectively as a team member and technical lead.

Work Environment:
The role involves physical activities such as bending, lifting, and prolonged sitting, as well as exposure to electrical currents and working in confined spaces.
