Job Title: Percussion Teaching Artist

Location: Chicago

Role Summary

The Percussion Teaching Artist will engage with students through small group and individual lessons, focusing on a curriculum that encompasses music theory, performance, improvisation, and composition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction (90%): Provide exceptional music education to students in grades 1-12, integrating theory and composition into lessons.
  • Serve as a supportive mentor, fostering a nurturing learning environment.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings and student performances.
  • Incorporate insights from professional development into teaching practices.
  • Deliver instruction that cultivates excellence in student performance.

Administrative Duties (10%):

  • Assess students' musical and behavioral progress.
  • Collaborate with families and fellow staff members.
  • Maintain timely communication with program management and parents.
  • Prepare lesson plans for substitute teaching as needed.
  • Supervise students during transitions and breaks.
  • Assist with additional projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in music education or performance, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong musicianship with a solid understanding of music theory.
  • Experience teaching percussion to children of varying ages and skill levels is advantageous.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and adaptability in teaching methods.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic educational environment.
  • Familiarity with diverse musical repertoire suitable for students.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to inclusivity.
  • Alignment with the mission and values of The People's Music School.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting and moving of items up to 20 pounds.

Compensation

Hourly rates vary based on class type.
