About the Role

The New York Times Company is seeking an experienced attorney to oversee Cybersecurity, Data Privacy and Protection, and Consumer compliance. This role will work closely with senior executives and operational leaders across the company, including Marketing and Advertising Operations, Subscription growth, Product, Engineering, Technology, Data governance, Information Security, Commercial contracts, and others.

Responsibilities:
  • Advise clients in the marketing, advertising, technology, data, product, cybersecurity, and human resources departments on the development, collection, use, transfer, governance, and protection of sensitive data, including personal information, from a domestic and international perspective.
  • Manage the preparation of data protection impact assessments and records of processing by data privacy managers.
  • Draft and implement privacy, cybersecurity, and consumer compliance processes, policies, and procedures; manage privacy policies, terms of use, and self-regulatory notices across digital properties.
  • Assist with the development of legal and compliance policies and procedures in coordination with other members of the legal department.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate the data provisions of commercial agreements.
  • Advise internal clients on consumer-facing laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Advise on legal developments related to subscriptions, including renewals, cancellations, and price increases.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the Vice President, Chief Data Privacy Officer.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree plus J.D. degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Active member of the New York State bar.
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience, including experience with data privacy, cybersecurity, and solutions related to advertising technology.
  • 4+ years of experience leading teams.
  • Experience analyzing complex regulatory materials and communicating their implications in a manner consistent with the New York Times mission and culture.
