General Overview

This position for a Law Enforcement Officer is a continuous recruitment effort. The Human Resources Office is accepting online applications for this role, even if there are currently no vacancies. The primary responsibility of this role is to perform general law enforcement duties aimed at safeguarding individuals and property within the County.

An individual in this position will engage in various law enforcement activities, including patrolling the County during assigned shifts, preventing and investigating disturbances and crimes, serving legal documents, responding to emergency calls, apprehending suspects, and executing related tasks. Officers are expected to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and composure while performing their duties. More complex issues will typically be addressed under the guidance of a Sergeant on the same shift. The role involves frequent interaction with the public, necessitating tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Duties are carried out in accordance with departmental policies and applicable laws, supplemented by specific instructions from superiors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts patrols of the County using various means; serves civil and criminal documents; responds to emergency calls; inspects unoccupied properties; and monitors for stolen vehicles, missing persons, or suspects.
  • Addresses calls for assistance, investigates complaints, and resolves suspicious activities, domestic disputes, and disturbances by determining the situation's true nature and taking appropriate action.
  • Investigates potential criminal activities through observation, witness interviews, and evidence collection; executes arrests and processes suspects; presents findings in court.
  • Serves warrants and legal documents; apprehends and processes suspects, transporting them to judicial or detention facilities.
  • Ensures courtroom security for judges, the public, and detainees; manages court sessions and jury procedures; escorts detainees to and from court.
  • Acts as a School Resource Officer, fostering law enforcement and community relations within educational settings; provides education on law enforcement topics and student counseling as necessary.
  • Participates in interstate law enforcement initiatives.
  • Utilizes a two-way radio for communication with headquarters; maintains equipment and vehicles in operational condition.
  • Transports individuals to various facilities as required.
  • Maintains detailed records and reports of activities following established protocols.
  • Assists other emergency services in managing crisis situations.
  • Educates the public on laws and local regulations; serves legal documents as necessary.
  • Operates radar equipment to monitor traffic speeds and investigates accidents.
  • Provides assistance to stranded motorists and offers directions to the public.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough understanding of state and federal laws, local regulations, and departmental policies, particularly regarding search and seizure, legal document service, and arrest procedures.
  • Familiarity with law enforcement principles, practices, and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of crime detection and identification methods.
  • Proficiency in utilizing information technology relevant to law enforcement tasks.
  • Ability to effectively use firearms and law enforcement tools, as well as apply self-defense techniques.
  • Skill in resolving conflicts collaboratively.
  • Capacity to exercise sound judgment in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Effective communication skills in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise reports of activities.
  • Capability to establish and maintain positive relationships with the community and colleagues.

Education and Experience

High school graduation and completion of basic law enforcement training are required; possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be capable of performing essential physical functions such as standing, walking, hearing, kneeling, reaching, and lifting.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 20 pounds frequently; and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity necessary for operating a police vehicle and observing details while on patrol.

Special Requirements

Prior to being assigned to sworn duties, candidates must possess a valid driver's license and meet the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.
