Job Summary

Nash County, NC is seeking a highly skilled Code Enforcement Officer I or II to join our team. As a key member of our Planning and Building Inspections department, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with state codes and local ordinances in the construction industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inspections of building construction to ensure compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes.
  • Review site plans, blueprints, and specifications for code compliance and issue permits as necessary.
  • Advise contractors and homeowners on interpreting and applying code regulations.
  • Notify responsible parties of defects and re-inspect to determine if corrective actions have been taken.
  • Maintain records of inspections and prepare necessary reports.
  • Communicate with citizens concerning code requirements.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in building code regulations and complete necessary certifications.
  • Enforce minimum housing code and perform damage assessments after emergencies.
Requirements
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to explain complex information in a non-technical manner.
  • Considerable knowledge of state codes and local ordinances as applied to assigned construction projects.
  • Considerable knowledge of building materials, techniques, and workmanship.
  • General working knowledge of construction and insulation.
  • Knowledge of the permitting process.
  • Knowledge of common computer applications used in office administration.
  • Skill in interpretation of codes and in their application to specific situations.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting plans and specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, County staff, and the public.
  • Ability to enforce regulations tactfully and firmly.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in an effective manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate and thorough records.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Class I qualifications, including four Level I Standard Inspector Certificates issued in the areas of Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical.
  • Class II qualifications, including four Level I Standard Inspector Certificates and five additional Level II or Level III Standard Inspector Certificates.
