Role and Responsibilities

The Laboratory Animal Technician 1 is responsible for providing essential care, health management, and research assistance for laboratory animals at our facility. This position is designed for individuals to acquire and refine the skills necessary for performing a variety of tasks related to the upkeep and research support of laboratory animals. Responsibilities may vary based on the specific animal populations and care needs, as well as departmental requirements and individual expertise. Our facility houses a diverse population of approximately 5,300 nonhuman primates and 1,500 small laboratory animals across multiple buildings and outdoor enclosures.

Key Duties and Expectations

1. Under appropriate supervision, perform routine animal husbandry tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Regular feeding and hydration of animals
  • Safe capture, restraint, and transport of animals for veterinary or research procedures
  • Thorough cleaning and sanitization of animal housing, equipment, and facilities
  • Support animal health management through treatment and diagnostic procedures, such as weighing and blood collection
  • Assist with general facility maintenance
  • Help with the unloading and storage of animal feed
  • Participate in group-housed animal processing
  • Engage in nursery animal care
  • Contribute to animal care and enrichment activities, including weekends and overtime as needed
  • Manage inventory and supply requests
  • Handle and identify various laboratory animal species

2. Monitor animal health and behavior, noting any abnormalities and reporting findings accurately.

3. Identify and report facility issues, performing basic maintenance tasks as necessary.

4. Operate essential equipment to support animal care operations, including cage washers and veterinary instruments.

5. Collaborate effectively with research staff to meet their needs in a professional manner.

6. Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental objectives.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fundamental understanding of animal care, demonstrated through experience with pets or livestock
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and following instructions
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with technical and professional personnel
  • Ability to assist with research tasks in a professional context
  • Competence in performing general animal husbandry duties

Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License and capability to operate university vehicles

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED; knowledge acquired through on-the-job training

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 months of relevant experience with animals, or
  • Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), or
  • 2 years of indirect experience in laboratory animal care.

Working Conditions:

  • Tasks may involve navigating wet or slippery surfaces and confined spaces.
  • Work is performed in areas that may not be climate-controlled.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic agents and hazardous materials.
  • Regular schedule with possible weekend and holiday shifts.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Capability to maneuver through various animal housing environments.
  • Dexterity to perform essential animal care tasks safely.
