Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Utility Technician to join our team in North Carolina. As a Utility Technician, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks associated with the repair and upgrade of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, customer service issues, and housekeeping at water and wastewater facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Installation, Maintenance, and Repair: Perform semi-skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of valves, meters, gauges, pumps, and associated equipment used in water distribution systems or wastewater collection systems.
  • Vehicle and Equipment Operation: Operate and perform routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment, including trucks, digging, trenching equipment, and other equipment in accordance with company procedures, equipment, and operating standards.
  • Supply and Equipment Management: Load and unload various equipment, chemicals, and supplies at worksites and storage areas.
  • Construction Equipment Operation: Operate medium construction equipment under the supervision of a qualified operator.
  • Safety and Security: Adhere to all safety and security operating policies, procedures, practices, and standards to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Ground Keeping and Custodial Work: Perform ground keeping and custodial work as assigned.
  • Problem Resolution: Resolve routine problems and notify management of issues outside the scope of responsibility.
  • Meter Reading: Read meters as needed.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Update and maintain documentation of work activities, including closing work orders as needed in the system.
  • Additional Tasks: Assist with other tasks or projects as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: No previous experience is required, although mechanical and/or electrical experience is preferred.
  • License: Valid U.S. driver's license. A CDL (Commercial Drivers License) must be attained within 90 days of hire.

  • Computer Skills: Familiarity with computers and work systems, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal staff.
  • Customer Service Skills: Strong customer service skills.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to work well under pressure and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in a team environment and foster a multi-tasking environment.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
  • Physical Demands: May be subject to extreme temperatures, noise, wet and/or humid conditions, mechanical, electrical, gas exposure hazards, fumes, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poor ventilation atmospheric conditions.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel: Working conditions include travel to work sites of Essential Utilities Inc. and/or other constituents. May be required to be on-call per the site schedule.
