Job Summary:
Under the guidance of the Radiology Supervisor, the MRI Imaging Specialist is responsible for conducting a variety of MRI examinations and supporting departmental functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts MRI scans of the brain, body, spine, and extremities for patients of all ages, adjusting scanning parameters to accommodate different body types. Selects and modifies technical settings to enhance image quality, utilizing advanced imaging techniques.
- Recognizes significant pathology in the human body and adjusts T1 and T2 scanning parameters to provide critical information for interpretation. Modifies equipment settings to minimize risks to both the patient and themselves.
- Proficiently performs Diffusion studies, MR Angiograms, and specialized examinations such as MRA runoffs and post-arthrogram evaluations.
- Utilizes magnetic resonance technology effectively, adhering to established protocols and employing scanning techniques including window and contrast levels, scanning sequences, and image reconstruction.
- Certified to initiate and discontinue IV lines for contrast studies in accordance with departmental policies. Capable of identifying and responding to IV contrast reactions, including alerting emergency personnel when necessary.
- Ensures accurate patient identification, reviews requisitions and previous studies for consistency, and records essential data on MRI requisitions. Responsible for comprehensive patient screening before entry into the MR system room.
- Effectively communicates the risks associated with implants, devices, and other objects to individuals entering the MR system room.
- Reviews examinations for technical precision, presents completed scans to the radiologist, and communicates relevant information to the care team post-procedure.
- Ensures proper anatomical orientation and identification on all required images.
- Maintains a daily log of patient MRI activities, documenting essential patient information to uphold quality care standards.
- Demonstrates the ability to prioritize patient care and implement physician orders effectively.
- Exhibits proficiency in computer skills related to patient orders, status updates, and billing.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Evening shifts from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with potential weekend and holiday work.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- At least one year of experience, including on-the-job training and internships as an MRI technologist or registry-eligible ARRT advanced certification in MRI required; new hires must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Graduation from an accredited radiology technology program or MRI Accredited Certificate Program required.
- American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists Certificate or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Certificate in MRI within 12 months of hire.
- Radiologic Technologist Certification.
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Venipuncture competency must be completed within three months of hire.
- Physical capability to stand, push, pull, and lift patients as needed.
- Ability to adapt routines to accommodate patient needs without disrupting departmental workflow.
- May need to lift objects over 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination.
- Must maintain focus on detailed tasks amidst interruptions.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Understanding of customer service requirements is important.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
- Proficiency in relevant computer software is required.
