Position Overview

We are in search of a qualified Staff Veterinarian to oversee our Safety Assessment operations.

This role entails supervising and executing veterinary practices that support various studies while managing all facets of the animal care and usage program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the health management of animals within the facility.
  • Conduct scheduled veterinary rounds and deliver clinical care and preventive medical support.
  • Provide surgical assistance and offer expertise in anesthesia, surgical procedures, and analgesic techniques to facilitate protocol development.
  • Design and implement training programs for staff, covering veterinary diagnostics, techniques, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Offer guidance on animal health care to veterinary services personnel as needed.
  • Engage in internal and external inspections and quality assurance audits related to veterinary or animal welfare matters.
  • Support the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities, including protocol and program reviews and facility inspections.
  • Collaborate with researchers on animal care, health, welfare, and treatment, and consult on study planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Assist in sentinel animal monitoring and other related programs.
  • Draft, review, and update veterinary care and necropsy standard operating procedures (SOPs) as necessary.
  • Conduct literature reviews on veterinary topics.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, guidelines, and standards pertaining to animal care and usage (e.g., USDA, FDA, AAALAC).
  • Recommend and assist in the establishment and enhancement of veterinary and animal care standards.
  • Manage controlled substances and maintain accurate records as required.
  • Innovate procedural improvements relevant to research studies.
  • Assist in managing assigned section activities, including supervising staff, scheduling, personnel actions, and performance monitoring.
  • Undertake special projects and support administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

The following are the minimum qualifications for the Staff Veterinarian position:

  • A veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) or an equivalent international qualification is required.
  • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state is required.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, along with strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to practice veterinary medicine in the work state is highly desirable.
  • ACLAM eligibility or accreditation is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in laboratory animal medicine is preferred.
  • At least two years of management experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines governing animal research and laboratory animal medicine is essential.
