POSITION OVERVIEW

The Legal Aid and Defender Association is seeking dedicated and skilled attorneys for full-time, part-time, or contract positions. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Michigan and possess a strong commitment to serving clients in need. Preference will be given to those with experience in landlord-tenant disputes, family law, and expungement cases, as well as fluency in additional languages.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver comprehensive legal services, including consultation, brief assistance, and representation in court, which may encompass appeals.
  • Draft legal documents, including pleadings, briefs, and motions; ensure meticulous case management and timely record-keeping.
  • Support funder reporting and evaluation as required.
  • Handle cases primarily in landlord-tenant law, family law, and expungements, with training available for those needing it.
  • Participate in outreach clinics and community education initiatives.
  • Present legal information on various topics to community members.
  • Engage in community outreach activities across the service area, which may occur during evenings or weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Ideal candidates will possess:
  • Experience in litigation or advocacy related to landlord-tenant, family law, and expungement issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with diverse populations.
  • A solid understanding of the challenges faced by low-income individuals and marginalized communities.
  • Proficiency in legal research and writing.
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preferred 2-3 years of litigation experience.
  • Juris Doctor degree.
  • Active membership in the State Bar of Michigan.
  • Good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A hybrid work schedule may be available. Full-time positions offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and both short-term and long-term disability coverage, along with paid time off. Contract roles are classified as independent contractors and do not include benefits or paid time off.
