SUMMARY
The Community Support Specialist is responsible for assisting both adult and juvenile clients throughout their legal journeys. This role involves close collaboration with clients and their families, particularly those facing mental health challenges or in need of additional resources, to ensure thorough support and representation.
The Specialist conducts interviews in various environments, including correctional facilities, and prepares comprehensive mitigation documentation for adult clients. They also aid legal representatives by identifying options for pre- and post-trial release, treatment alternatives, probation or diversion requirements, sentencing considerations, and post-sentencing resources. Maintaining accurate client records and other vital documentation is a key responsibility of this position.
The Community Support Specialist is committed to assisting legal professionals and clients, ensuring that individuals have access to the necessary resources and advocacy throughout their legal processes.
Reports directly to the Chief of Policy and Social Services.
This position is funded through a grant, with a commitment of 12 months of funding. Continued employment is contingent upon the renewal of grant funding for this role.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare detailed mitigation reports and collaborate with staff attorneys on sentencing matters;
- Conduct interviews with clients and relevant parties, including in-person meetings in correctional facilities and youth centers;
- Travel to various residential placement centers in the surrounding areas. Some travel to out-of-state facilities may be necessary;
- Work alongside attorneys to locate and interview collateral witnesses as required;
- Gather and assess client records;
- Assist in making informed decisions to support the resolution of juvenile and adult cases;
- Maintain comprehensive records of all clients within the adult and juvenile database systems;
- Engage in client meetings that influence public defender operations;
- Participate in annual statistical projects to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services;
- Support attorney staff in identifying housing and treatment options for clients;
- Perform additional tasks as directed by the Chief Public Defender.

- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related social services field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
- Paralegal certification is preferred but not mandatory.
- Basic proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, is required;
- Strong verbal, written, and oral communication skills are essential;
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required;
- Reliable transportation is necessary.
