Position Overview

The McConnell Group, Inc. (TMG) is in search of dedicated Animal Research Technicians to assist in the management of animal care and research protocols. The role requires flexibility in working hours, primarily Monday through Friday, with occasional after-hours support for specific tasks. The total work hours will not exceed 40 hours per week.


Essential Qualifications:

  1. An associate degree in biological sciences is required, along with a minimum of three years of experience in laboratory animal research or five years in hands-on animal care.
  2. Proficiency in preparing for surgical procedures and conducting necropsies on various small and large animal species is essential.
  3. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary.
  4. Competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and SharePoint is required.
  5. The ability to stand for extended periods and lift equipment weighing up to 30 lbs is mandatory.
  6. A flexible work schedule is necessary to meet the demands of research activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. A degree in a field related to animal sciences, health sciences, or a relevant discipline is preferred.
  2. Certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) is desirable.
  3. Experience working with non-human primates in a research environment for three years is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in necropsy procedures, including the collection and proper labeling of biological samples, and ensure thorough documentation of processes.
  2. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of cages and racks in accordance with applicable regulations.
  3. Perform basic animal husbandry tasks and develop an environmental enrichment schedule for animals.
  4. Conduct minor surgical procedures on laboratory animals as required.
  5. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements by maintaining accurate records.
  6. Collect experimental data, including measurements such as blood pressure and weight, as part of protocol support.
  7. Assist in the development of standard operating procedures and maintain facility sanitation.
  8. Report any maintenance issues to the Facility/Vivarium Manager to uphold required standards.
  9. Manage inventory and order supplies for the vivarium.
  10. Support research staff by providing forms and regulatory guidance in collaboration with the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and Branch Chief.
  11. Coordinate internal and external inspections, tracking corrections and reporting to the AV and Branch Chief.
  12. Review research protocols and related documents to ensure adherence to IACUC and Air Force policies.
  13. Maintain electronic databases and records of animal research protocols and manage animal inventory.
  14. Follow established guidelines for all animal care activities and ensure compliance with regulations.
  15. Provide quality control for administrative aspects of the Animal Care and Use Program.
  16. Offer administrative support to the branch and perform additional duties as required.
  17. Conduct health checks on animals and notify veterinarians of any health concerns.

Important Note: Contractor employees requiring access to U.S. Air Force bases and related facilities must be U.S. citizens. Possession of a permanent resident card does not equate to U.S. citizenship.
