AMBULATORY PROCEDURE TECHNICIAN I, II, III:

Career Ladder:

The three levels within this position are distinguished by the degree of independence, supervision required, specialized skill set, and ability to mentor new employees in the use of all equipment, as well as the capability to lead and achieve established departmental goals.

Band One (I): Entry-Level Procedure Technicians - Technicians new to the organization require training and regular direct supervision or guidance from a more experienced technician. This typically involves orientation to the department's infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures, and routines.

During this period, the technician must demonstrate progress toward proficient and competent performance of required tasks.

Success in this band necessitates independent responsibility for performing general procedures as defined by the department, specimen handling, and high-level disinfection in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated documentation while providing high-quality care within a team environment.

Band Two (II): Competent Procedure Technicians - With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all job responsibilities and consistently shows initiative to assist in other areas of the department as needed. Demonstrates meticulous attention to detail when performing procedural tasks. Completes all associated documentation for imaging and specimen management.

A Band Two technician also serves as a mentor in the onboarding of newly hired technicians, directly orienting them to equipment, computer programs, high-level disinfection, as well as departmental and hospital policies.

They are recognized as subject matter experts in downtime procedures and act as super-users when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department.

They assist in mentoring newer technicians by providing one-on-one support in conjunction with the RN HLD Champion. Anticipates supply and equipment needs in relation to daily procedures and operations. Effectively troubleshoots issues that arise within the department and addresses them accordingly. Represents the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups.

Takes responsibility for preparing the department and staff for evaluations and participates in the collection of data related to performance audits.

Follows and maintains all instructions for use, introducing changes to staff as necessary. Coordinates new equipment education presentations by suppliers and/or vendors.

Band Two status requires a minimum of 6 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in a procedural setting.

Band Three (III): Expert Procedure Technicians - In addition to the responsibilities of a Band Two technician, a Band Three technician is proficient in assisting with the most advanced procedures offered by the department.

This includes additional orientation time and competency.

They are responsible for establishing and maintaining new technology machines and equipment brought into the department at the request of physicians.

They collaborate closely with company representatives to establish training and work with unit leadership to determine new competency checklists for each new procedure.

Band Three status requires a minimum of 1 year of progressively responsible professional work experience as a procedure technician.

Eligibility for advancement consideration requires the technician to be in good performance standing and demonstrate the ability to perform position duties.

Readiness for movement in the bands is assessed by the manager, based on successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder.

Movement to a higher band is contingent upon departmental need and requires final approval from the Ambulatory Nursing Director in collaboration with Human Resources.

Individuals hired externally with relevant experience may enter the career band as a Band Three to serve in a lead role based on operational needs of the department.
