Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Caltrans Tree Maintenance Supervisor, the Tree Maintenance Worker will perform various tasks related to tree maintenance and care along transportation facility rights-of-way and within state facilities. The worker will be responsible for trimming, shaping, and removing trees, as well as applying pesticides as needed. Additionally, the worker may be required to perform aerial rescue operations and work in a variety of weather conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Trim and shape trees to maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment
  • Remove trees that are hazardous or dead
  • Apply pesticides to control pests and diseases
  • Perform aerial rescue operations as needed
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and precipitation
  • Operate a variety of equipment, including trucks, personnel hoists, brush chippers, and aerial equipment
  • Perform heavy labor associated with tree work, including climbing trees and using safety equipment
Requirements
  • Valid California Driver's License (CDL)
  • Pass a drug screening prior to hire
  • Ability to climb trees in excess of 40 feet in height
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Working Conditions

The Tree Maintenance Worker will be exposed to a variety of working conditions, including loud noise, dust, chemicals, extreme weather conditions, great heights, confined spaces, uneven and unstable terrain, and next to vehicle traffic. The worker will be required to wear personal protective equipment and follow all policies and procedures.
