Job Summary
The Operating Room Nurse is responsible for circulating in the operating room and assisting physicians with advanced tasks or equipment during surgical procedures. The RN must be able to work under high pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepares for surgical procedures by completing assessment of the patient and reviewing patient chart, diagnostics, and labs. Reports abnormal results to physicians and other appropriate care givers.
- Formulates and initiates plan of care based on patient specific needs and medical plan of care. Plans care in collaboration with members of multidisciplinary team.
- Prepares for surgical procedure by ensuring all appropriate supplies and instruments are available and room set up is appropriate.
- Documents surgical procedure in the patient record. Documentation is timely and in accordance with policy.
- Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure.
- Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.
- Assists with OR turnover between cases.
- Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff and students, as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum education: Associates Degree in Nursing
- Preferred Education: Bachelors Degree in Nursing
- Minimum experience: One year of operating room experience in the acute care setting
- Preferred experience: 1 year in Level 1 trauma OR setting
- Required licenses/certifications: Current, valid RN license in the state of practice, BLS certification, ACLS certification
Work Environment
This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient. The position also requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
