JOB OVERVIEW: The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will play a pivotal role in supporting the Principal Investigator, staff, and students in conducting research focused on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems within the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources. The selected candidate will engage in various research initiatives related to Urban Agriculture and will be responsible for grant applications, mentoring student research, and publishing high-quality peer-reviewed articles in the fields of sustainable and urban farming.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and staff to design and implement farming activities, while mentoring and supervising undergraduate and graduate students involved in research.
- Conduct both collaborative and independent research aimed at enhancing production dynamics and profitability within sustainable agriculture and food systems.
- Manage laboratory and farm environments with professionalism and diligence.
- Maintain accurate records and data in a structured spreadsheet format.
- Track applications and monitor the progress of prospective graduate students.
- Assist faculty, staff, and students in utilizing research equipment effectively.
- Perform field and laboratory experiments addressing critical agricultural challenges such as yield enhancement, nutrient management, and climate adaptation for small fruits and vegetables primarily cultivated in Kentucky and neighboring regions.
- Collaborate with faculty, fellow researchers, and industry stakeholders to translate research findings into actionable solutions for agricultural issues.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, prepare scientific publications, and present research outcomes at academic conferences and seminars.
- Contribute to the development of extramural grant proposals to secure funding for ongoing and future research endeavors.
- Undertake additional related responsibilities as necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in Agriculture or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated expertise in community-engaged research and both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Prior experience in practical or research settings related to food and agriculture.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong community engagement and research skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Experience in food safety management and/or organic agriculture.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May involve occasional heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects exceeding 50 pounds.
- Work environment may expose the individual to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and physical hazards, necessitating adherence to basic safety protocols.
