Job Summary

The Mechanic I, Industrial Process Systems is responsible for performing testing, troubleshooting, repairing, installing and modifying mechanical equipment and systems. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical and hydraulic principles, as well as the ability to work with complex multi-component assemblies and devices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform testing and overhaul of mechanical equipment and process piping systems in accordance with applicable procedures and guidelines.
  • Install and replace process piping, valves, and other appurtenances fabricated from copper, brass, steel, ductile iron, PVC and stainless steel and other materials common to the industry.
  • Perform work involving the installation of complex mechanical and hydraulic systems or pumping units.
  • Perform life safety testing and maintenance of backflow prevention devices in facilities located in Distribution and Conveyance Systems areas of responsibility.
  • Adhere to Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedure and confined space entry protocols related to the maintenance of mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) for mechanical and other hazards within the work environment.
  • Perform maintenance-related housekeeping duties as required in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Utilize MAXIMO Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to review assignments and document work completed in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Maintain equipment and tools utilized to test, repair, install, and replace equipment.
  • Maintain and manage shop stock including inventory stored in mobile units.
  • Operate Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position. Maintain vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner. Reports any operating deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.
  • Comply with rules and regulations related to safety and other work-related policies and procedures of the Authority.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and four (4) years of progressive experience directly associated with installing, repairing and maintain mechanical and/or hydraulic components of machinery, equipment and systems.
  • Must possess and maintain current a valid Motor Vehicle Operating License, a Class B Commercial Driver's License, and a DC Water Vehicle Endorsement.
  • Must possess and maintain current the Authority's certification as a Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principles related to complex multi-component assembles and devices.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and electronic principles.
  • Demonstrates ability to use basic test equipment to diagnose and correct equipment and control system problems.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools such as, but not limited to, drill press, pedestal grinder, or rip saw.
  • Participates and successfully completes fork lift and overhead crane training programs and refresher courses. Ability to properly utilize rigging and lifting equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics and blueprints.
  • Basic knowledge of pertinent safety guidelines, rules and regulations of OSHA and other governing entities.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and abilities.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates skills and abilities to utilize standard office management systems, including computers, scanners, copiers, printers, and software for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and internet based software applications.

  • May work in atmospheric conditions of fumes, odors, gusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, exposure to oils, exposure to industry related chemicals and fluids.
  • Ability to lift and carry parts, assemblies, and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Work performed on ladders, elevated surfaces and platforms, and in confined spaces.
  • Frequent standing; moderate walking and climbing.
