Job Overview

Project Canary, a pioneering climate technology firm, is seeking a Lead Research Scientist to join our innovative team. We specialize in the design, manufacturing, and commercialization of advanced laser-based gas analyzers that serve a multitude of applications, including the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions, atmospheric pollutants, and natural gas leaks.

Our mission is to empower organizations to effectively identify, measure, and mitigate their emissions through our sophisticated enterprise emissions data platform. We are committed to enhancing environmental accountability and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop ultra-compact, long-path tunable mid-infrared diode laser spectrometers for precise trace gas detection and quantification.
  • Characterize and evaluate new products to ensure compliance with established specifications.
  • Investigate new applications for existing analyzers to expand their utility.
  • Implement continuous improvements for current product offerings.
  • Automate and optimize testing processes for efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with optical and testing teams to facilitate production support.
  • Provide advanced technical assistance to our customer support team.
  • Conduct experiments, analyze results, and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Stay informed on the latest scientific literature and advancements in the field.
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Physics, Chemistry, or a related discipline with a minimum of 5 years of experience in optical spectroscopy and gas sensing.
  • In-depth knowledge of quantitative laser spectroscopy and spectral analysis techniques.
  • Practical experience with optics, tunable diode lasers, and photodetectors.
  • Prior experience in instrument design and development is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as LabView, Python, and C++.
  • Experience with spectral simulation utilizing the HITRAN database.
  • Expertise in optical design is a beneficial asset.
  • Experience in assembling and testing optical and mechanical subsystems, including lasers, lenses, mirrors, and detectors.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in rigorous data analysis using software such as Origin.
  • Ability to handle and maintain sensitive optical components using industry-standard methods.
  • Proficient in managing sensitive electronic components with tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently after initial training.
  • Ability to work safely with compressed gas tanks and related equipment.
  • A strong sense of curiosity and motivation to drive innovation.
  • Prior industrial experience is preferred.
