Key Responsibilities
  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws, as well as district policies and procedures, to maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Investigate and document crimes and incidents, collecting evidence and providing testimony as needed.
  • Assist with executive protection responsibilities for assigned school administrators, including providing a visible presence and responding to potential threats.
  • Protect pupils, staff, and school property by conducting mobile patrols and responding to incidents on foot.
  • Remove and/or refuse admittance of unauthorized persons from district properties, and detain or arrest suspects as necessary.
  • Make immediate on-site investigations of crimes or offenses, collecting evidence and securing witnesses.
  • Perform duties as assigned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including physically subduing and apprehending individuals as necessary.
  • Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies to prevent, control, and investigate anti-social or illegal activities directed against school facilities, pupils, or personnel.
  • Assist in the orientation of school administrators and pupils concerning security measures, and maintain the Code of Conduct and dress as required by the Police Department.
  • Use firearms according to required Department standards, and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief of Police or Designee.
Requirements
  • Must possess and provide evidence of a High School Diploma or GED Certificate at time of application.
  • Currently certified or certifiable as a police officer by the Michigan Coalition on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), and able to provide evidence to that effect.
  • Must be 21 years of age, have access to an operating automobile, and be able to work all three shifts (day, afternoon, or night), seven days per week.
  • Must pass a medical examination and drug screening, and possess a valid Michigan Driver's License with no more than two points.
  • Prior experience working with youth is highly desirable.
Security Clearance

Internal applicants do not require a new security clearance, unless their new role requires a different type of criminal background check. External applicants will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check, in accordance with Michigan law.
