Job Summary
Brazos County is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Environmental Health Specialist to conduct inspections of food service establishments, on-site sewage facilities, daycare and foster homes, and pools. The successful candidate will also participate in vector surveillance, instruct the public in food safety rules and practices, and investigate public nuisance complaints and foodborne illness complaints.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct food service inspections, including reviewing and approving construction and remodeling plans
  • Teach food handler's classes and speak at other educational events
  • Investigate food establishment complaints, including foodborne illness complaints and initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Review plans and inspect both new and existing OSSF's as assigned to ensure compliance with state and local ordinances, rules, and regulations
  • Investigate OSSF complaints and initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Perform daycare and foster home inspections
  • Inspect pools for compliance with state requirements
  • Participate in vector surveillance program
  • Respond to environmental and public health complaints both inside and outside the city limits
  • Perform general administrative work, including data entry, generating reports, preparing notice of violation letters, and completing of timesheets and other required reports

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree with at least 30 hours in basic or applied science from an accredited college or university
  • Laws governing food-service facilities and inspection practices; laws governing OSSFs; personnel policies and procedures
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with health district employees, county employees, representative of governmental agencies, and the general public
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds

Certifications and Licenses
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • Registered Sanitarian in the State of Texas
  • Designated Representative License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
  • Pesticide Non-Commercial Applicator License with the Texas Department of Agriculture
  • Certified Pool Operator
  • Certified Pool Inspector Certification
