Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Respiratory Therapy Extern to join our team at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. As a Respiratory Therapy Extern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced respiratory therapists and gain hands-on experience in providing high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist licensed respiratory therapists with routine and basic level respiratory therapy procedures, including oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, aerosol therapy, and incentive spirometry.
  • Organize and maintain a supply of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies, adhering to department-specific standards.
  • Collect and clean equipment, following proper procedures and observing standard precautions.
  • Process disposable and non-disposable equipment according to infection prevention guidelines.
  • Complete annual hospital competencies and learn new equipment, supplies, procedures, and processes as needed.
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties, requiring lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to walk, stand, squat, reach above the shoulders, and sit throughout the workday. Repetitive use of hands, including simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation, is also required. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. from the floor to the waist, lift up to 20 lbs. over the head, and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance is necessary. Personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary to protect against chemical and radiation hazards, as well as blood and body fluids.
