Respiratory Therapy Assistant

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Respiratory Therapy Extern to join our team at Advocate Health. As a Respiratory Therapy Extern, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our experienced respiratory therapists and gain hands-on experience in providing high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities- Assist licensed respiratory therapists with routine and basic level respiratory therapy procedures, including oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, aerosol therapy, and incentive spirometry.
- Organize and maintain a supply of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies, adhering to department-specific standards.
- Collect and clean equipment from various hospital areas, reassembling it according to proper procedure and observing standard precautions.
- Process disposable and non-disposable equipment based on infection prevention guidelines.
- Complete annual hospital competencies and learn new equipment, supplies, procedures, and processes as needed to perform the job effectively.
- Perform patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including understanding the principles of growth and development over the life span.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Respiratory Therapy.
- No experience required.
- Preferred experience/education: to be in the final semester/year of Respiratory Program.
This role requires the ability to walk, stand, squat, reach above the shoulders, and sit throughout the workday. Repetitive use of hands, including simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation, is also required. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, lift up to 20 lbs. over the head, and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance is necessary. Additionally, the ability to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present is required. The role may also involve exposure to chemical and radiation hazards, as well as blood and body fluids, requiring the use of personal protective equipment as necessary.
