Reporting To: Advocacy Coordinator

Role Summary:

The Crisis Response Advocate serves as a primary support resource for individuals in distress. This role demands the capacity to operate swiftly and effectively in high-pressure situations. The Advocate offers comprehensive case management services, including crisis intervention, safety assessments, advocacy, resource information, emergency financial support, and assistance with claims processes. The Advocate is accessible to clients in urgent need through 24-hour helplines and in-person visits at the support center.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related field preferred, or 3 to 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in human services, counseling, or advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver case management services, including crisis intervention, safety planning, advocacy, and resource referrals.
  • Engage with clients in person and via telephone.
  • Accompany victims to hospitals, law enforcement, and court proceedings while providing support and advocacy.
  • Regularly review and manage assigned claims effectively.
  • Provide necessary information and referrals to clients in accordance with agency protocols.
  • Report any suspected child abuse to the appropriate authorities.
  • Assess and allocate emergency financial assistance to victims as required.
  • Handle incoming calls on the 24-hour crisis hotlines during designated hours.
  • Enhance community outreach by researching local organizations and participating in events.
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives and special events.
  • Complete administrative tasks, including documentation, activity reporting, and maintaining accurate client records.
  • Follow established protocols for report completion.
  • Maintain statistical records and prepare necessary reports.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on program needs.

Required Competencies:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Capability to work independently while keeping management informed.
  • Resourcefulness and strong advocacy skills.
  • Organizational skills to manage documentation and record-keeping efficiently.

Additional Requirements:

  • Complete and maintain certification as a NYS DOH Rape Crisis Counselor.
  • Complete mandated reporter training and report any suspected child abuse.
  • Ability to travel to various locations as needed for work responsibilities.
  • Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of email and MS Office applications.
  • Must have a reliable cell phone for work purposes, with reimbursement provided.

Work Environment: The Family Services Inc. Center for Victim Safety and Support operates as a 24-hour crisis center. Advocates will balance their time between community engagement, direct client interaction, administrative duties, and team collaboration.
