Job Overview

The Bryan County Board of Commissioners is currently seeking applications for a Full-Time Mechanic within our Maintenance Shop Department.

Key Responsibilities

This role involves executing skilled and semi-skilled repairs and maintenance on a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, as well as other gasoline and diesel machinery.

Typical duties include:

  • Conducting proficient maintenance tasks such as repairing, adjusting, and servicing motor vehicles and gasoline and diesel-powered construction equipment; performing oil changes, filter replacements, and transmission fluid changes.
  • Executing general overhaul tasks on internal combustion engines and all associated equipment components and accessories.
  • Performing tune-ups on gasoline and diesel engines, adjusting timing mechanisms, carburetors, and fuel and ignition systems; replacing spark plugs and distributor caps.
  • Adjusting and realigning brakes; maintaining hydraulic and electrical systems; assisting in the recharging and repair of air conditioning systems.
  • Repairing power mowers, air compressors, pneumatic tools, pumps, and other small machinery.
  • Installing and repairing vehicle scanners and radios; welding materials as necessary; repairing and/or replacing tires.
  • Managing parts and supply pickups; ensuring cleanliness and organization of the shop; maintaining the wash rack, changing fuel filters, and hoses on steam cleaners.
  • Assisting with debris collection along roadways, posting road closure signs, mowing grass around the shop, and performing similar tasks.

Work is carried out under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Shop Superintendent or an assigned supervisor. Performance is assessed through observation and review of completed repairs.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required; additional vocational training in automotive and engine repair is preferred.
  • At least one year of experience as an automotive or engine mechanic, or in a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
