Position Overview

Part-Time: 16 to 29 hours per week, including weekends

Role Summary

The Gallery Service Representative (GSR) will be an integral member of our Visitor Engagement team, blending exceptional customer service with visitor interaction and basic art safeguarding skills.

GSRs are the guardians of the visitor experience at the Mass Museum of Contemporary Art. They share their insights about exhibitions and artists with enthusiasm, promote performing arts and public programs, elucidate the museum's history and architecture, and encourage visitors to explore the local community and the broader region.

Team members will receive training to engage with diverse audiences, fostering connections between visitors and the artworks on display while encouraging meaningful dialogue.

GSRs ensure the protection of artworks and enforce museum policies regarding food and drink in galleries, as well as photography and contact with art pieces.

Reporting to the Visitor Engagement Manager, the GSR collaborates with various staff members to ensure that our visitor experience aligns with the museum's mission.

The Gallery Service Representative will support team members by working closely with the Visitor Engagement Manager, GSR Coordinator, and other department leaders on training, scheduling adjustments, and additional responsibilities as determined by the Visitor Engagement leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit the highest level of guest service, maintaining professionalism and approachability with all visitors and staff.
  • Assist with museum opening and closing procedures, including activating artwork displays, managing lighting, and preparing exhibition materials.
  • Provide informative responses to visitor inquiries about exhibitions, museum details, and local history, facilitating engagement with the art and programs.
  • Ensure visitors display proper admission credentials.
  • Support the training of new team members.
  • Safeguard artworks by monitoring visitor behavior and enforcing gallery rules.
  • Conduct daily checks of exhibits and galleries.
  • Assist with managing visitor flow during special installations and events.
  • Provide wayfinding assistance and recommendations for navigating the museum.
  • Participate in special events, performances, and public programs as assigned.
  • Promote museum membership and stay informed about special offers.
  • May be cross-trained in other visitor engagement roles, including Box Office support.
  • Attend all required training sessions and departmental meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of front-line customer service experience, preferably in a museum or cultural setting.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate technical equipment such as iPads and virtual reality setups.
  • Outgoing demeanor with a passion for engaging with visitors and colleagues.
  • Capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment while remaining calm during peak times.
  • Team-oriented with a respectful attitude towards colleagues.
  • Demonstrates a passion for art and a desire to share that enthusiasm with the public.
  • Commitment to delivering an excellent visitor experience.
  • General knowledge of tourism in the local area.

Work Environment:

Physical Requirements:

  • Effective verbal communication with visitors and colleagues is essential.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment when necessary.

This position is part of the bargaining unit for UAW Local 2110.

Non-exempt. Starting pay rate is $18/hour.
