Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled K'iche Interpreter to join our team at the Children's Refugee Shelter. As a vital member of our multidisciplinary environment, you will play a pivotal role in fostering understanding and connection among our young refugees and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality K'iche interpretation services in various settings, including medical, community, and legal contexts.
  • Facilitate effective communication between non-K'iche speaking staff and K'iche-speaking children, ensuring mutual understanding and respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines and standards of interpreting.
  • Assist with the translation of written materials as needed.
  • Promote awareness among staff about best practices for working with an interpreter.
  • Be sensitive to cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services.
  • Assist with scheduling, coordination, and other administrative tasks as needed.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience as a K'iche interpreter, with exposure to medical, community, and legal interpreting scenarios.
  • Proficiency in English and K'iche.
  • Certification in Interpreting from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Exceptional listening, retention, and note-taking skills.
  • Ability to navigate sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.
