San Francisco, California, United States Gradient Full time

At Gradient, our goal is to enhance global comfort by revolutionizing residential environments to promote health and well-being while safeguarding our planet. The heating and cooling industry currently contributes more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector, and projections indicate that cooling usage will double these emissions in the next three decades. Nevertheless, ensuring comfortable living spaces is essential for health and productivity, particularly for communities most affected by climate change. Our vision is to create a world where everyone can enjoy fully decarbonized, comfortable buildings.

The Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer will become an integral part of our mechanical engineering division, focusing on the design of mechanical systems for both existing and upcoming products. The anticipated salary range for this position is between $130,000 and $180,000.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the mechanical design aspects of our products, including custom components, major functional subassemblies, assembly processes, and the durability and reliability of these systems.
  • Oversee the development of components and subsystems from initial concepts through cross-functional development, detailed design, design for manufacturability (DFM), tooling initiation, assembly, field support, and eventual product retirement.
  • Employ iterative design techniques to achieve optimal solutions for our products, customers, and business objectives.
  • Act as the mechanical team representative in cross-departmental meetings, collaborating with other engineering and business units (Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design, Thermal Management, Supply Chain, Manufacturing).
  • Assist in establishing product requirements and steering the product development process to create a product that resonates with users.
  • Support supply chain management, vendor selection, and the manufacturing of mechanical components.
  • Collaborate with production and manufacturing teams to create testing and assembly fixtures.
  • Conduct testing to identify failure modes, refine designs, and validate the robustness and reliability of mechanical systems.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, including 3D CAD models.

Required Qualifications:

  • A shared commitment to creating positive work environments and products aimed at mitigating climate change while enhancing human well-being.
  • 5-10 years of experience in designing mechanical components and systems, particularly large sheet metal and injection-molded plastic parts.
  • Proficiency in rapid prototyping and iterative design processes leading to production tooling.
  • Experience in shipping products in quantities exceeding 10,000 units annually.
  • Familiarity with various production environments and factories.
  • Experience in creating assembly instructions.
  • Ability to write test plans, conduct tests, and analyze/publish results.
  • Expertise in CAD software, with a preference for Solidworks.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g., Arena).
  • Knowledge of tolerance analysis and GD&T, resulting in clear 2D drawings.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering (BS, MS, or higher) is preferred.
  • Willingness to work at our headquarters part-time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HVAC or heat pump products.
  • Familiarity with the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, supporting devices in the field, and design iterations aimed at cost reduction and performance enhancement.
  • Experience in performing detailed structural analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or similar methods.
  • Experience designing components for outdoor use that can withstand various environmental conditions.
  • Experience with high-volume tooling design.
  • Knowledge of specifying foams and adhesives for outdoor applications.
  • Experience in designing UL-compliant products.

Benefits:

  • Equity opportunities.
  • Comprehensive medical, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Commuter benefits.
  • Unlimited paid time off within reasonable limits.
