Key Responsibilities

The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in providing direct patient care during surgical procedures. Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and maintaining a sterile environment for surgical interventions.
  • Assisting in the selection and handling of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Labeling and managing patient specimens appropriately.
  • Performing surgical skills as defined by the department's scope of practice.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety in the operating room.
  • Responding to delegated tasks from licensed nurses or physicians.
  • Recognizing and addressing emergency situations effectively.
  • Implementing safe infection control measures.
  • Supporting nurses and physicians during various patient procedures.
  • Engaging in educational opportunities to enhance skills.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in aseptic techniques and surgical procedures.
  • Preparing the operating room and assisting during surgeries.
  • Providing necessary instruments and equipment during surgical operations.
  • Acquiring skills to operate specialized surgical equipment.
  • Assisting with preoperative and postoperative patient care as directed.
  • Facilitating patient transport and other care duties within the operating room.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • An Associate Degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited program or certification from a recognized body; or
  • A minimum of four years of experience as a surgical technologist with a High School Diploma; or
  • Four years of relevant military or on-the-job surgical technology training with a High School Diploma.

Licenses and Certifications

Certification as a Surgical Technologist is required within one year of employment if not already certified.


Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Proven surgical technology skills, ideally in a hospital operating room setting.
  • Prior experience as a Surgical Technologist is advantageous.
