Job Title: Clinician

UPMC Hamot, a Magnet designated facility located in Erie, PA, is seeking a Clinician to join our team.

About the Role:

The Clinician is a nurse leader responsible for fostering a culture of excellence in patient care and serving as a professional nursing practice role model.

Reporting to the Unit Director or department manager, the Clinician conducts employee evaluations, manages staff selection and hiring, and oversees daily performance of direct reports.

They provide service-based education, clinical expertise, orientation, training, practice consultation, and coordination of clinical activities.

Additionally, the Clinician may be accountable for delivering nursing care during shifts when necessary.

Responsibilities:
  • Builds teams and relationships through mentoring and positive communication.
  • Coaches on cultural diversity and addresses workplace violence and impairment.
  • Demonstrates accountability for safe work hours, time management, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Uses performance improvement tools and techniques to enhance care quality and work environment.
  • Shares improvements with other units and across the business system.
  • Focuses on the development of others, impacting patients, families, peers, and the healthcare team through mentoring and education.
  • Acts as a preceptor for nurses and helps develop new preceptors.
  • Pursues continuous learning and shares expertise within and beyond the clinical unit.
  • Aligns with national and organizational goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Creates a compassionate patient experience and shares new knowledge through various platforms.
  • Uses Relationship Based Care to meet patients' clinical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and communication skills in patient care.
  • Ensures comprehensive patient documentation for effective communication.
  • Leads clinical nursing practice improvements and supports staff through change.
  • Practices participatory leadership and takes on formal leadership roles in quality improvement and onboarding.
  • Completes or assists with staff performance evaluations.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience
  • Master's degree preferred
  • BS/BSN required; if BS degree not in nursing, a Master's or higher degree in Nursing is required
  • Demonstrated competence as a Professional Staff Nurse
  • Ability to provide care and interact appropriately with patients of all ages served by the assigned unit
  • Knowledge of growth and development principles over the life span
  • Ability to assess patient data and interpret information to meet age-specific needs
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handling multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment
  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities related to patient care
  • Critical thinking skills to lead others in applying the nursing process
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 1 year of hire or transfer.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) within 6 months of hire or transfer into department.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.
  • Act 34
  • National Certification preferred.
