Job Summary

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, construction equipment, and motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment, construction equipment, and motor vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • Maintain and repair roads, parking areas, ditches, and culverts using appropriate heavy equipment for the task.
  • Operate various types of equipment and trucks on roadways and various terrains in inclement and/or varying weather conditions.
  • Meet the requirements for a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement.
  • Will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards.
  • Will be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
  • Occupancy of government quarters may be required.
  • May be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month.
Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to drive safely (motor vehicles).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation).
  • Ability to operate safely (non-motor vehicle).
  • Operation of motor vehicles.
  • Reliability and dependability as an Engineer Equipment Operator.
  • Work practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).
