Military Social Services Specialist

This is a Title 5 Excepted Service position within the Army National Guard. The role of the GS Social Worker involves providing essential support to enhance the psychological well-being and readiness of military personnel and their families.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate preventive, remedial, and supportive services aimed at optimizing the mental health of service members.
- Collaborate with the psychological health team to formulate and implement an annual Behavioral Health (BH) program strategy.
- Identify program priorities and gaps, ensuring alignment with annual objectives.
- Assist in the creation and periodic review of standard operating procedures for the BH system of care.
- Develop and maintain relationships with military and community organizations to bolster prevention initiatives and expand BH resources.
- Work alongside various disciplines to address family support, resilience, suicide prevention, sexual assault, and substance abuse issues.
- Coordinate findings from outreach efforts with leadership in a timely manner.
- Design and execute prevention and educational programs.
- Conduct thorough needs assessments and SWOT analyses to inform program development.
- Create actionable plans to address the needs of service members and emerging BH concerns.
- Provide access to primary prevention services to educate leadership and the community about psychological health dynamics and treatments.
- Perform comprehensive assessments following the guidelines of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
- Utilize and interpret diverse psychological assessment tools and prepare detailed evaluation reports.
- Streamline processes for managing BH referrals and case management services.
- Conduct population-based behavioral health surveillance to identify trends and enhance targeted prevention strategies.
- Collect and analyze data on service utilization and mental health encounters.
- Educate providers on psychological health resources and interventions to promote wellness and readiness.
- Evaluate training opportunities for state medical and BH teams.
Qualifications
- Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in social work.
- Experience should include consultation on psychological health issues, conducting clinical assessments, and developing outreach programs.
- A minimum of two years of independent clinical social work practice within the last five years is required.
- Must hold a current, unrestricted license to practice clinical social work in any U.S. jurisdiction.
Education Requirements
- A master's degree or higher in social work from an accredited institution is mandatory.
