Parks Maintenance Worker Job Summary

The City of Port Townsend is seeking a skilled Parks Maintenance Worker to join our team in the Public Works Department. This role involves performing a variety of maintenance and repair work to various park and recreation facilities, ensuring they are safe, accessible, and well-maintained for the community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct landscape and ground maintenance activities, including mowing, line trimming, tree pruning, and irrigation work.
  • Perform maintenance and repair activities to park facilities, including painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and concrete work.
  • Operate equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, riding mowers, chainsaws, and power tools as needed.
  • Transport equipment to various work sites using a truck and trailer.
  • Perform custodial duties, including public restroom cleaning and emptying garbage cans.
  • Clean and maintain park facilities to acceptable standards.
  • Maintain basic record-keeping regarding purchases and work activities.
  • Enforce park rules through public education and interaction.
  • Work with volunteer groups.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance of equipment in coordination with the Fleet division.
  • Assist with development and implementation of safety programs.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain within the first 12 months in this position.
  • Traffic Control and Flagging certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months in this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years' experience working in parks or a related field.
  • Experience working with landscape equipment and medium equipment such as tractors and loaders.
  • Experience using a maintenance management software program.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
  • Current CDL Class A or B.
  • GIS and GPS mapping experience.
Working Conditions:

This position requires working in the field primarily in the outdoors during all types of weather, with repeated walking, bending, stooping, and lifting. The ability to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs. is also required. Vision and hearing at the level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected) are necessary. A full range of motor skills is also required.
