Job Overview

The City of Port Townsend is actively seeking to fill a position within the Parks division of our Public Works Department. This role may be filled at the Maintenance Worker, Operator I, or Operator II level, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the selected candidate will perform a range of maintenance and repair tasks for various park and recreational facilities. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct landscape and grounds upkeep, including mowing, trimming, tree care, weed management, planting, and irrigation tasks.
  • Carry out maintenance and repair work on park facilities, encompassing painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and concrete tasks.
  • Operate machinery such as backhoes, front-end loaders, riding mowers, chainsaws, and other power tools as required and qualified.
  • Transport equipment to various job sites using a truck and trailer.
  • Perform custodial duties, including cleaning public restrooms and emptying trash receptacles.
  • Ensure park facilities are maintained to high standards of cleanliness and safety.
  • Maintain basic records related to purchases and work activities.
  • Educate the public on park rules and regulations through engagement.
  • Collaborate with volunteer groups on various projects.
  • Assist with the preventative maintenance of equipment in coordination with the Fleet division.
  • Support the development and implementation of safety programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain it within the first year of employment.
  • Traffic Control and Flagging certification or the ability to obtain it within six months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in parks maintenance or a related field.
  • Experience with landscape equipment and medium machinery such as tractors and loaders.
  • Familiarity with maintenance management software.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Current CDL Class A or B license.
  • Experience with GIS and GPS mapping.

Working Conditions

This position involves outdoor work in various weather conditions, requiring physical stamina, including walking, bending, stooping, and lifting. The ability to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs. is necessary, along with adequate vision and hearing to perform essential functions.
