Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Greenhouse and Garden Operations Assistant to join our team at the Preservation Society of Newport County. This is a full-time position that requires a significant degree of independence to respond to requests, resolve issues, and handle administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administrative Support
    • Provide direct support to the Director of Gardens and Landscapes, including administrative functions and gardening/greenhouse chores as assigned.
    • Route communication to and from the Director and other departmental employees.
  • Departmental Liaison
    • Serve as the departmental first point of contact for external parties and other PSNC departments.
  • Document Preparation
    • Draft correspondence and assist with the preparation of various documents and budgets.
    • Conduct research and compile data when required.
  • Record Keeping
    • Maintain manuals, calendars, files, contact lists, and supplies for the Director and department.
  • Garden Volunteer Program
    • Assist with the Garden Volunteer Program.
  • Time and Leave Management
    • Process timecards and leave requests.
  • Greenhouse and Garden Maintenance
    • Water, fertilize, prune, or otherwise maintain all house foliage, and container plants on all properties and in greenhouses.
  • Health and Safety
    • Follow prescribed safety and health rules, regulations, and practices.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Associate's degree or equivalent.
  • Experience
    • Minimum one year of documented supervisory experience.
  • Skills
    • Ability to maintain flexible behavior and approach towards assignments and seek clarification of assignments and priorities when necessary.
    • Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment.
    • Broad knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and familiar with all relevant environmental laws.
    • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, presentation, and collaborative skills to work effectively with teams throughout the organization.
    • Ability to consistently arrive at work on time and ready to begin duties.
    • Working knowledge of desktop tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Outlook.
    • Possess a valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.
Physical Demands
  • Physical Abilities
    • Ability to stand for extended periods, usually 40-45 minutes per hour.
    • Ability to walk quickly for extended distances under emergency circumstances.
    • Requires use of various hand tools and adjuncts such as wheelbarrows.
    • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
    • Must be able to climb ladder and reach.
    • Must be able to use power tools.
    • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Salary

$20.00-$24.00 an Hour
